Until the 18th century farming in England followed the crop rotation system, with each farmer holding strips of land in large fields surrounding the village and also having rights over common pasture, meadows, heath and woodland. During industrialisation, with a need to improve farming and develop more intensive cultivation, a process of enclosure took place in which the large fields and the common lands were re-organised into plots or fields and allocation to farmers according to the amount of land and rights they had held previously. Each plot was then enclosed by hedges and fences.
Initially enclosure was brought about by private agreements between the local landowners, but from the 18th century it was generally by Acts of Parliament. Commissioners surveyed the land and produced a map showing the proposed new plots. A volume or award accompanied the map which identified who was to be allocated which plot.
The enclosure map is usually large scale and manuscript. The map usually shows:
The enclosure award is usually arranged alphabetically by person, rather than in number order of plots on the plan. It shows:
The above description has been provided by Nottinghamshire Archives.
The information provided in this list has been taken directly from the Woodborough Enclosure document. Spelling of names and locations are as quoted without corrections. Note: Page numbers in this list below relate to the pages in the document held at Nottingham Archives.
Above: A section of the Woodborough Enclosure map of 1798 which shows plot sizes, it also shows names of tenants or land owners.

This style continues throughout the whole document making it a very difficult read.
The plan below, as far as is known, was not included in the Enclosure Award, but it is useful to see how the lands would have been allocated before Enclosure, neighbouring parish names are also shown:-
As can be seen below, the original transcription was devoid of both punctuation and paragraphs. The style of our version is faithful to the spellings in the archived copy. Place names and names of owners or tenants are retained despite there being numerous inconsistencies throughout the whole document. To enable Enclosure to be more easily read, punctuation has been added and the text broken down into paragraphs and sub-paragraphs.
It is interesting to discover where the 321 individual plots were located, and also who owned or tenanted them. The Inclosure Act also sets out the roads and bridleways, including their widths between boarder hedging. The names of the roads and where, and by whom, the drainage is to be maintained, all things that we take for granted today. So as you drive or walk our lanes, notice where the hedges are and consider that they were first stipulated in 1795.
The Enclosure document was written virtually without any punctuation or paragraphs as shown below:-
